Although shade cloth (HDPE) is not waterproof a well-made and well installed shade sail should direct the majority of rainwater to the lowest anchor point/s, only a light mist should come through the body of the shade sail. With a solid (PVC) shade sail, ponding is a very serious problem and should be rectified ASAP before structural damage occurs.
